Parents Like Us Never Ever Could Have Imagined This

We dreamt of futures for our children that included all the best things life could give them.

We struggled with addiction ourselves, while trying our best to teach our children a better way.

We didn’t plan to be parents…but stepped up.

We walked away when things got tough.

We sat, willing the phone to not ring.

We whose hearts sank every time they heard the wail of a siren.

We were assaulted physically and emotionally by a child we no longer recognized.

We banished our children from our homes to keep everyone else safe.

We who had no idea that our children were using substances that would kill them.

We knew the awful truth and prayed for peace from the grief that shrouded us.

We did the best we could with what we knew.

We thought love would be enough.

We have learned that love is not enough. And nor are prayers because if they were enough, our hearts would not be aching with the loss of our child to an overdose.
